Setting the standards

Education Week reports today that the case for creating a set of national learning standards is "gaining steam" with education associations and state and national policymakers. The creation of a national set of standards is not a new idea, but it seems that this time it might become reality. Supporters include the National Governors Association and the American Federation of Teachers. The article cites the "inconsistency" amongst states. However, is this idea even plausible?
